OnePlus Nord is only the second midrange phone offered by OnePlus, the first being the OnePlus X which was released back in 2015. It still packs enough to go toe to toe with their competition, the likes of Pixel 4a, iPhone SE, Samsung A71 etc.
So let’s take a deeper look:
The OnePlus Nord has yet to be released in North America, so this review is based on the Factory Unlocked, International Version device, sourced from the European Markets (you can purchase one from here).
OnePlus had to trim down the cost in order for this phone to be affordable, so they opted for a slower Processor, a Snapdragon 765G as opposed to the 865 on the flagship OnePlus 8 models.
The other cutback is the lack of Wireless charging, and plastic rails around the phone as opposed to the metal in their higher end models.
Nevertheless, the phone is packed with OnePlus 8 camera, dual selfie cameras, 90 Hz AMOLED display, a decent size battery and an incredibly fast charging Warp 30T system.
The phone is 5G ready which is a huge plus for the price tag, but as this is based on an International Version Factory Unlocked device, it will not have all the Bands of the North American GSM carriers, which means that the signal may drop back to 4G LTE in some areas, where 5G reception is not great.
The 90 Hz AMOLED display, coupled with their Oxygen OS, runs smoothly and beautifully, add the fast charging (0 to 100% in just over an hour) makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.
There are of course downsides too, the lack of MicroSD slot to increase memory, the other being camera, although the main camera is very good, the other cameras are far from perfect. The same goes to the front (selfie) cameras. The lack of Headphones jack and IP rating are a few other minor setback of this device. These may not be deal breakers but if you are looking for those spec, then perhaps a look at other Unlocked Phones maybe an alternative route.
All in all, it is a great combination of style, features and affordability. It offers almost the same experience as their flagship phones thanks to their premium design, slick performance and smooth usability, a premium device without the premium price tag.
