OnePlus Nord N100: Has OnePlus Settled?

OnePlus announced their new range of smartphones called the Nord, a short while ago, and the anticipation was that a so called “Lite” version of the handsets would be announced soon. Sure enough they have since announced 2. The OnePlus Nord N10 5G and the Nord N100, the Nord N100 being the focussing device on this article.

The Nord N100 is designed and destined for the budget phone category, with a sub $250 price tag.

OnePlus has mostly made phones for enthusiasts, they normally pack their devices with superfast speeds, big displays, huge amounts of RAM, great cameras to name a few, on their flagship phones.

But now they have dipped into uncharted territory, so have they ticked all the right boxes?

The Overview:

The article is based on the Factory Unlocked, International Version of the OnePlus Nord N100, Here: you will find the best prices for this device guaranteed.

As mentioned above, OnePlus phones are normally associated within a particular category, however this device is not for those who look for those particular spec, such as big displays, flashy design, aesthetically pleasing, or powerful cameras.

The OnePlus Nord N100 is a barebones, very basic device running on Android 10 and importantly on OnePlus’ beloved Oxygen OS software.

It’s also aimed at those who look for an all-rounder on the budget, which this phone does offer, a headphone jack, MicroSD slot for memory expansion, for instance.

The OnePlus Nord N100 is similar in terms of layout to the original OnePlus Nord, but this is made almost entirely of plastic, one of the ways OnePlus has chosen to cut cost down. It also has thicker bezels, to name another cutback.

The front of the phone houses a 6.52 inch screen with a punch-hole display, which is a Gorilla Glass 3, with a larger chin at the bottom. On the rear there are a set of 3 cameras, a decent and quick capacitive fingerprint reader in the upper middle part.

The selfie camera does a good job. With its 8MP camera, it take pictures and records videos at 1080p 30fps rate.

The battery stands out than the most competitions, at 5000mAh, there are only a very few devices that can match that. The battery on the Nord N100 can last at least 2 days before a top-up is required. Coupled with an 18W fast charger, it sits well amongst the competition.

OnePlus chose a very strange option when it comes to the screen on this device. They went with a 720p display and a 90Hz refresh rate, which is rather baffling since a 720p resolution screen only needs a 60Hz refresh rate, so it begs the question, why did they focus on this refresh rate when they could have invested the money elsewhere on the phone by choosing a 60Hz screen?

The performance overall is good, the phone houses Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor and 4GB of RAM, and 64GB ROM which can be expanded via MicroSD card. Lower end games run with few issues, however playing higher end game is not exactly a design feature of this device.

OnePlus made another error with this device. The Nord N100 comes with Android 10 preinstalled which is already outdated by Android 11, and that will be the only system update available for this device.
