Xiaomi POCO M3 Unlocked: New Standards for Budget Phones

Poco, launched as a Xiaomi sub-brand in 2018, quickly gained popularity, largely thanks to its first smartphone, the Poco F1. The Pocophone was sometimes referred to as the "flagship killer" for offering high-end specifications at an affordable price. This success enabled the Chinese electronics giant to separate Poco as an independent brand in early 2020, shortly before the launch of their second phone, the Poco F2 Pro.

And then they released the Poco X3, which has been a hugely popular and another success story for the brand, and now they have a new target segment, the budget category, introducing the Poco M3!

The Review:

Given that the Poco M3 is in budget category, the spec exceeds the previously set standards. The Poco M3 has a 6.53 inch HD+ screen, with 1080 X 2310 pixels, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and a refresh rate of 60Hz, with a dot drop selfie lens which completes the front of the phone. It is also the first budget phone to receive TÜV Rheinland® Low Blue Light certification.

Poco M3’s back has been designed to impress. Poco have combined a couple of materials to create something that resembles rubber, it feels well while holding and it can be protected with a case which is provided with the phone.

The upper part of the back is dominated with triple camera set sitting on a piece of glass with the letter POCO written on the side.

As mentioned, the Poco M3 houses Triple camera set, a 48MP main camera, accompanied by a 2MP Depth and a 2MP Macro lens, which are capable of producing really good photos. Even using the cameras in low-light conditions produce really good photos using Night Mode. The other two cameras which enables Bokeh and Macro modes respectively, produce decent results too. The selfie lens has an 8MP camera, which again surpasses expectations of this category phone and ticks all the right boxes, especially for those using it for social networks.

Poco M3 pushed the boundaries of processor spec, it houses Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 662 - Kryo™ 260 (11nm) with 3rd Generation Qualcomm® Ai Engine. Add 4GB RAM and the option of either a 64GB or 128GB ROM, and the ability to further expand the phone’s memory via MicroSDXC for up to 256GB, it exceeds what the competition has to offer in the price range.

The other major advantage of the Poco M3 is its Battery, in other words, a Power Bank! At 6000mAh, it outclasses the competition, not just at budget category, but even some flagship devices. It can easily last 2 full days of average use and to top it off, MIUI has a lot of battery saver options to stretch the battery life even further. The Poco M3 can actually be used as a Power Bank via USB-C cable to charge up wearables in an emergency.

The Poco M3 also supports Fast Charging, thanks to its 22.5W fast charger included in the box, it can fully charge the phone in just over an hour, which is another great feat to have nowadays.

The MIUI 12 based on Android 10 Operating System works really well on Poco M3, it packs a lot of features, such as Dark Mode, and Digital Wellbeing. Google Assistant is also onboard and a simple swipe from the left of the home screen brings Discover feed. The Tools folder, which is tucked away, includes FM Radio amongst other useful apps. As expected there are some Bloatware apps, which are at minimum, such as Amazon, Facebook, etc. which cannot be uninstalled.

One other feature they did really well is the quick notification menu, which was inspired by a recent version software of a giant phone company based in Cupertino. Nonetheless it is a neat feature on Poco M3.

Final Thoughts:

The Poco M3 is an astonishingly good value for money, quite simply with the M3, Poco raised the bar in terms of what the bare minimum handset should look like. In all honesty, it actually looks pretty good, and it can be said that there's a new sheriff in town as far as budget smartphones are concerned, and its name is Poco M3
